Relation Jeopardy

President Donald Trump has acknowledged the several American men being held captive in North Korea. Those men being Kim Dong-Chul who has been in custody since 2016, Tony Kim has taken in custody in 2017, and Kim Hak-Song who was taken into custody in  May of 2017, each with a different accusation for why they are being held. This is nothing new for North Korea though, typically detaining visitors with the accusation being they have undermined the state or anti-state crimes. This as well as the upcoming Summit where South Korean leader Moon Jae-In will be having a meeting with the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, in order to work out the disagreements between the two government and its steadily growing tension between them. There will also be another meeting where both Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump will be sitting down to discuss their government relations with each other. The detained citizenship might be able to digress though as they are “going on tours, receiving medical treatment and eating good food” as stated by AFP cited source and South Korean activist Choi Sung Ryong. The president has also expressed his desire for the three men to be returned home soon. There are even negotiations happening which are trying to release Kim Dong-Chul who has been detained since 2015. This is good for us as a country because the President is basically our international relations with other countries whilst also representing us as a collective, with his upcoming meeting and desire to help these men the U.S. will hopefully stop being seen as an enemy to some nations. Do you think that the three men's rights even if they were in a different country were justly infringed on even though they were mainly accusations and suspicions? Also recently President Trump has been acting upon his own reasoning and advice from his administration on handling foreign affairs, do you believe at this point does he have the justification to be the mediator of us with foreign affairs or that someone else more qualified; who also stands with the peoples thoughts, should be that spokesperson?

  1. Based on the recent circumstances, I feel a certain way about some points in this situation. For one, I feel that Donald Trump shouldn't be the one to discuss with Korea at the Summit. He has always been one to say words and statements that have left people angry and disrespected. If Trump is not careful, he could say something that can outright anger both sides of Korea and can cause a reaction that could be dangerous considering the types of disagreements each side has had over the past few months. Trump may be the wrong one to have a discussion with Korea, but sadly no one else is around to discuss terms but him. Also, I don't think the men held captive should be imprisoned for a long period of time. They were held on suspicious behavior, but who is to say that they did anything dangerous? In my opinion, they should be examined to see what they were up to and if they are guilty for what they have done, then they should be imprisoned for a long period of time. But if not, they should be let go.

    1. I agree with your statement about Trump not being the best person to go and discuss things with Kim Jong Un since his past behavior has angered many, but seeing as he's the only one that can represent us it is a necessary evil. If it's only suspicious behavior I agree with you about how it should be gauged on how dangerous it was.

  2. For clarification reasons I'll break down the article to its three main points. 1. The Summit meeting happening between North Korea and South Korea to resolve their tense government relations. 2. The upcoming meeting with Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un about the three American prisoners as well as their intent to settle things peaceably. 3. The three Prisoners being arrested for suspicious acts against the Korean government.

  3. I do not think that the united states rights do not apply to foreign countries only because America only has power in there own land and other places that they occupy. Therefore I do not think that the rights of the three men where infringed because once you step out of the borders of the United states onto another country you have to follow the rules and regulations of that country. I also think foreign countries like North Korea should be able to detain people from any country because currently North Korea is not on good terms with many different countries. I do think that Trump should deal with foreign Affairs to a certain extent, for this reason that a president should learn how to deal with foreign countries , and also it could come across as disrespectful to many countries to not meet the leader of another country especially when it comes down to treaties and many other things because it shows a lack of trust. And lastly they should have it because Trump does not know how handle foreign affairs professionally.

    1. That does make sense for North Korea to detain them but for 15 years on suspicious behavior alone is still a bit too much. But I do think that the president or any leader should be able to negotiate terms with other countries in order to get their citizens back.

  4. The job Trump is doing is the job he is needed to do. He needs to speak on foreign affairs and problems. Actions like these doeasnt prove he is fit for the job it proves he's doing his job. He needs more impact for me to say he's fit for the job which I believe he isn't.
